Submissions
The Cine-Files is now accepting submissions for Issue 6 (Spring 2014), a themed issue on film performance.
Submission Deadline: February 1, 2014
We seek submissions (4000-6000 words) that explore the significance of film performance in close readings, historical analyses or theoretical inquiries.
Papers might consider the following questions:
- What critical terminology can help us better analyze film performance?
- How do actors’ contributions challenge or complicate definitions of auteurism that identify the director as the chief author of a film?
- What can we learn from pioneering works about film performance, and how might we complicate earlier insights about film acting in light of recent developments in the film industry?
- What can we learn from analysis of films that feature non-professional actors? How does the non-actor complicate our views of film performance?
- How can we apply insights from stardom studies or studies of acting methods to better theorize film performance?
- What is the relationship between performance and genre? Contributors might contrast the work of the same performer in different genres, for example.
- What is the relationship between cinephilia (as a mode of writing and way of seeing) and the analysis of film performance?
- How have paradigms of performance analysis changed in the era of digital cinema? What recent films offer particularly intriguing case studies for analyzing the actor in digital cinema?
Submission Guidelines
The deadline for completed submissions is February 1, 2014. If you would like to submit an abstract (300-500 words) first, to see if we are interested in reading your paper, you may do so by December 1. Articles should be accompanied by a brief email indicating the article title, author’s name, institutional affiliation and contact information. The Cine-Files practices double blind review, thus the attached submission (doc, please) must not contain the name of the author or any reference to the author. Articles should follow Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition. Articles should be 4000-6000 words. However, we will consider shorter or longer pieces if they fit the needs of our issue.
